Amana brand Packaged Terminal Air Conditioner/Heat Pump ("PTAC") Units

Product description

This recall involves certain Amana brand Packaged Terminal Air Conditioner/Heat Pump ("PTAC") units manufactured by Goodman. Only Amana branded units were sold in Canada.  The products are beige-coloured and the brand name is printed on most of the units' control covers. The PTAC units are installed through the wall and are used to provide room climate control. They most often are installed at hotels, motels, schools, apartment buildings and commercial spaces.

The model number and serial number can be found on the serial plate label located behind the front cover of the unit.

Hazard identified

The outdoor fan motors can overheat, posing burn and fire hazards.

As of February 26, 2018, the company has received no reports of incidents or injuries in Canada. In the United States, the company has received nine reports of PTAC units catching on fire, including one report of smoke inhalation with medical attention.

Number sold

Approximately 3,400 units of the affected products were sold in Canada and approximately 534,000 units were sold in the United States.

Time period sold

The recalled Packaged Terminal Air Conditioner/Heat Pump Units were sold from February  2010 through February 2018 in Canada.

The recalled units were sold from January 2010 through February 2018 in the United States.

Place of origin

Manufactured in the United States.

What you should do

Consumers should contact Goodman for a free repair kit and installation by an authorized technician. Commercial owners are being contacted directly and will be provided with free repair kits.
