K&N KN-204 Oil Filters

Product description

The KN-204 and KN-204C (collectively, KN-204) is an O/E replacement oil filter for motorcycles, personal watercrafts, and all-terrain vehicles. The filter is contained within a heavy-duty metal canister that is black or chrome in colour. The words "K&N Performance" are painted on the side of the canister. The oil filter includes a 17 mm exposed nut designed for easy oil filter removal.

The defective oil filters were manufactured between March 1 and September 30, 2016. All KN-204 oil filters include a six-digit manufacturing code on the end of the filter canister. Affected oil filters can be identified by the second and third characters contained in the manufacturing code. The defective oil filters will contain as the second and third characters of the code the number/letter combinations of 3H, 4H, 5H, 6H, 7H, 8H, and 9H with the number corresponding to the month of the year and the letter "H" representing the year 2016.

Hazard identified

Oil can leak at the area where a removal nut is welded to the end of the filter. If there is a leak, oil can come in contact with the rear tire or rear brake of a motorcycle, leading to a loss of control or a crash. Such safety concerns do not arise in other vehicles, such as all-terrain vehicles and personal watercrafts.

As of November 14, 2017 the company has received three reports of damage to the engine, rear tire or to brake pads of vehicles where the KN-204 oil filter had been installed in Canada, and no reports of injury.

Number sold

Approximately 13,277 of the affected products were sold to consumers, retailers, and distributors in Canada.

Time period sold

The affected products were sold from March 2016 to August 2017.

Place of origin

Manufactured in Thailand.
