Affected products

John Deere model X710, X730, X734, X738 and X739 lawn and garden tractors

Product description

This recall involves John Deere model X710, X730, X734, X738, and X739 lawn and garden tractors with serial numbers beginning with 1M0X. A complete list of serial numbers included in this recall can be found on the firm's website. The lawn and garden tractors are green and yellow with yellow rims. The model number is on both sides of the engine hood. The serial number is located on the right side of the machine, below the foot rest.

Hazard identified

The reverse implement option (RIO) system can fail, posing a laceration hazard to bystanders. RIO is a safety system that shuts off power to the mower blades when the machine is placed into reverse.

Neither Deere & Company nor Health Canada have received any reports of consumer incidents or injuries to Canadians related to the use of these lawn tractors.

Number sold

Approximately 166 of the recalled lawn and garden tractors were sold in Canada at authorized John Deere dealers. Approximately 5,423 recalled products were distributed in the United States.

Time period sold

The recalled products were sold from December 2015 to July 2016 in Canada and the United States.

Place of origin

Manufactured in the United States.

What you should do

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled lawn and garden tractors and contact the nearest John Deere dealer to make arrangements to have the lawn and garden tractor repaired.  This service will be performed at no cost to the customer.

Consumers may view the release by the US CPSC on the Commission's website.

Please note that the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act prohibits recalled products from being redistributed, sold or even given away in Canada.
