Hazard identified

Venmar Ventilation has implemented a safety retrofit program for heat recovery ventilators due to fire hazard.

Venmar Ventilation has received several reports of major home fires where the suspected cause is a heat recovery system.

Burlington fire officials determined that two fires in Burlington have been attributed to Venmar units.

There is potential of the motor overheating in certain models of air exchangers that may result in a fire hazard.

Number sold

Approximately 1,000 units were sold in Ontario.

Time period sold

The Safety Retrofit Program covers the units produced between October 2006 and August 2007 and distributed under the brand names of: Venmar, Venmar AVS, vänEE. Rheem, Rudd, Protech, Carrier, Bryant and Broan.

Sold by Heating, Ventilating & Air Conditioning wholesale distributors nationwide, and selected building supply stores such as Home Depot and Home Hardware.

Manufactured in Canada.

What you should do

Venmar is attempting to contact all owners of the heat recovery systems that may pose a potential fire hazard.

Owners of the air exchange systems that are affected must immediately turn the unit off and unplug it, and contact Venmar as soon as possible by: visiting the firm's website at www.venmar.ca; phone 1-866-441-4645; or mail to SUP, 550 Lemire Blvd., Drummondville, Quebec, Canada, J2C 7W9.
