Mainstays 4-Drawer Chest

Product description

This recall involves Mainstays 4-drawer chests of drawers with plastic drawer glides and a single decorative pull on each drawer. The composite wood chests were sold in three colours: alder, black forest, and white. The chests measure 102.4 cm (40 5/16 inches) high by 70.3 cm (27 11/16 inches) wide by 37.3 cm (14 11/16 inches) deep. Model numbers included in the recall are 5412301PCOM, 5412012PCOM, 5412015PCOM, and 5412026PCOM. The model number is printed on the instruction manual. The product is sold in the unassembled state.

Hazard identified

The recalled chest does not comply with the performance requirements of the ASTM F2057-14 International Standard Safety Specification for Chests, Door Chests, and Dressers. The product can tip-over if not securely anchored to the wall by using the tip-over restraints provided with the product, posing a tip-over and an entrapment hazard that can result in death or serious injuries to children.

As of August 24, 2017, the company has received no reports of incidents or injuries in Canada.  In the United States, the CPSC has received one report of an injury after a chest of drawers tipped over onto a four-year-old child.

Number sold

Approximately 1,000 units of the affected chests were sold by Walmart online across Canada, and about 1.6 million units were sold by Walmart online and in stores in the United States.

Time period sold

The affected chests were sold from November 2014 to June 2016 in Canada and from April 2009 through May 2016 in the United States.

What you should do

Consumers should immediately stop using all recalled product that is not securely anchored to the wall, move them to an area that children cannot access them. Contact Ameriwood for a free repair kit that includes a wall anchoring device and feet for the unit. Consumers who require additional installation guidance should contact Ameriwood for further assistance.
