Product description

This recall involves the following pet food brands manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods:

  • Premium Edge
  • Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul
  • Diamond
  • Diamond Natural
  • Taste of the Wild

Various weights and product types are affected by the recall. Only those products with a production code having both "2" or "3" in the 9th position AND an "X" in the 10th or 11th position are affected by the recall.

The best before dates for all of the recalled products are December 9, 2012 through April 7, 2013. Further instructions for identifying affected products can be found here.

Hazard identified

A manufacturer in the United States, Diamond Pet Foods, has recalled several batches of its dry pet food due to possible contamination with Salmonella. Several people in the United States and two people in Canada have reportedly become ill with a Salmonella infection as a result of contact with pets or pet food contaminated with Salmonella bacteria.

Pets such as dogs, cats, amphibians and reptiles and their food can carry Salmonella bacteria. People can get infected with the bacteria from handling their pets or their pet's food or feces. Symptoms of salmonellosis often include:

  • sudden onset of fever
  • headache
  • stomach cramps
  • diarrhea
  • vomiting

Number sold

Approximately 62,415 units of the recalled pet food products were sold by various retailers in Canada.

Time period sold

The recalled pet food products were sold from December 2011 to April 2012.

What you should do

Consumers should immediately stop using any of the dry pet food products affected by this recall and contact Diamond Pet Foods.

Consumers are advised to always wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after feeding, handling or cleaning up after pets. Clean surfaces that come into contact with pet food or ill pets.
